Keyboard Overlap

The possible way to overcome this problem is to whether

1. Design your application that all input fields are visible although the keyboard is displayed
2. Scroll the page up and down as the user focuses and loses focus on a input field

We will try the latter one now.

First, create a new View based project, I have named it scrollview. Afterwards, place some Text fields as in the above example.

-Open the scrollviewViewController.h file generated and place the following code to create and connect the text fields:

-Connect the view objects to these fields – as in the previous tutorials.
-Now, let’s create the functions to move the view up and down. Open the .h file again and place the following :

- (void)keyboardWillShow:(NSNotification *)notif;
- (void)viewWillAppear:(BOOL)animated;

-Now the .m file, and further explanation is below:

-Assign this IBAction to Editing Did Begin event of “ALL” the textboxes. It will check if the focused field is Last Name or Name fields first. If yes, the view will scroll up with the set ViewMovedUp function, descibed below.

Scrolling the View Up

As almost every application does involve more than one screens or views, I thought my first step should be creating and switching between multiple views. Basic requirements include XCode 4 with iOS 4 SDK, as expected. What we will do is :

1. Create a View-Based Application and,
2. Add another view, switch between two by the help of a button on each of them.

Step 1 – Create a New Project

Create a new project with choosing Menu > New Project > Application Tab > View-Based Application. Name it anything you want – e.g. Screen.

This would create a number of files – ScreenViewController.h, ScreenViewController.m and a ScreenViewController.xib.

Click File > New > New File and choose UIViewController Subclass and click Next. Enter the propert “Subclass of” as “UIViewController” – the default value, click Next. Now it will prompt you to save the .m file – name it “SecondViewController”, click Save.

Now you should see an additional of 3 files, SecondViewController with .m, .h and .xib extensions.

Go to ScreenViewController.h and add the line below just after the @interface definition :

-(IBAction)pushButton;

Save and open ScreenViewController.m and include “SecondViewController.h” file, after add the line below just after the @implementation line:

-(IBAction)pushButton {
SecondViewController *second = [[SecondViewController alloc] initWithNibName:nil bundle:nil];
second.modalTransitionStyle = UIModalTransitionStyleCrossDissolve;
[self presentModalViewController:second animated:YES];

Now you should connect pushButton to a button that we will create on the .xib file.

Step 2 – Connecting the pushButton Function

Open the ScreenViewController.xib. This part is fun and real easy. Click on the button below to show the “Utilities” window.

You will see the Objects appear on the right below – drag and drop a Round Rect Button to the window, name it as you want.

Now, right click on the button. You will see the Events popup:

Place your mouse over the circle next to “Touch Up Inside” – a “plus” will appear as above. Hold down the left-button of the mouse and drag it to the icon below – File’s Owner:

Then pushButton function will appear, click on it. This is basically how you assign a function to an event of an object. We will use this exact steps on the SecondViewController.xib later.

Step 3 – Editing the Second View

Open SecondViewController.h file now. Add the following line after @interface:

-(IBAction)pushButtonBack;

As in the ScreenViewController.m, open the SecondViewController.m this time, and add the line below after the @implementation:

-(IBAction)pushButtonBack{
[self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES];
}

This will close the 2nd View and display the 1st View back. Now, create a button on the SecondViewController.xib file, then connect this pushButtonBack function to that button as we did on the ScreenViewController.xib.

Step 4 – Running the Application

The best part – click on the Run button on the upper left hand side of the screen and see your application in action!

Next Steps

What I plan is to create a basic to-do application that stores the information on my server at home, so that I can access my to-do list from anywhere from multiple iPhone’s. Hope it does not take a long time to do that!

Anyways, in order to keep up with the mobile technologies and practice my software skills I decided to create some basic iPhone applications. I will be posting sample tutorials and example codes here as I progress.

XCode 4

Haven’t been writing for a while now – but I have been busy both with educational and business matters. I needed some space to adapt back to real-life as my weekdays were scheduled as 9am-6pm Work, 7pm-1am Studying for the past few months.

Anyways, in order to keep up with the mobile technologies and practice my software skills I decided to create some basic iPhone applications. I will be posting sample tutorials and example codes here as I progress.

My first step was to purchase XCode 4 from App Store for Mac for $5.00

I have come up with a very basic introduction to iOS programming on MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Web Site:http://courses.csail.mit.edu/iphonedev/

Also found a great source – but a bit more advanced called iCodeBlog:http://www.icodeblog.com/

This is it for now, I will be studying Objective-C and creating some basic applications until I feel ready for the next-step.

In the morning the first thing I did was to check if the installation was finished – because I needed that downgrade real quick! But you know what happens, if something can go wrong, then it will, especially when you need it most

Terminal

I came up with a very annoying situation after upgrading my Snow Leopard to new Mac OS Lion Developer Preview: PHP 5.3.5 had issues running some of my pages and the OS was having incredibly hard times processing while a massive Disk Write operation – e.g. Backup – was going on.

Thus, I decided to downgrade back to Snow Leopard due to stability. I did boot up with the installation disc and initiated the setup, then went to bed as it was going to last at least 40 minutes and I was way too tired to wait till the end.

In the morning first thing I did was to check if the installation was finished – because I needed that downgrade real quick! But you know what happens, if something can go wrong, then it will, especially when you need it most - disc read error during setup process.

Then I decided to create a bootable USB flash disc but it was a bit tricky to accomplish that on a Mac. Here’s the story :

1. First, you need to create an  .iso file from your CD/DVD. The easiest and fastest way is to use Burn for Mac – a freeware software that you can download from http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/
2. Once the .iso file is on your desktop, change it’s extension to .dmg
3. Open the terminal and connect your USB disc.
4. Type diskutil list - this will display a list of mounted drives
5. Note the USB disc name (let’s call it disk1s1)
6. Unmount it : diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk1s1
7. Run :

sudo dd if=/your_dmg_path/filename.dmg of=/dev/disk1s1 bs=1m
It will take a while (~ 1.5 hours for 7 GB) but eventually your bootable USB disc will be ready to be used. Afterwards just restart and hold down the Option key!

Reboot BlackBerry

Since almost a year after upgrading my BlackBerry device’s OS to version 5.0 I have been facing with a weird problem – that my device’s free file space was decreasing to almost zero after a few days, forcing me to reboot it regularly.
After a clean reboot the free space was increasing back to it’s normal level, however more than a half of my battery was drained when the boot had completed. I knew that this was some kind of a bug but I accepted it and have been trying to live with that for a while. I installed an add-on,BerryJoose application, which was continuously monitoring the memory usage and was trying to free the memory whenever it was possible. Yet, I was only able to postpone the next reboot for at most a week.
Finally, I had some free time and thanks to my Calendar for the reminder, I Googled as “memory leak issue on blackberry os 5”. No solid results. So I decided to upgrade my OS version from 5.0.0.554 to 5.0.0.822 – AT&T’s latest version.
Surprisingly my device was booting a lot faster than before and the free memory was not decreasing at all day by day! So I would suggest you look for an upgrade for your device if you have a memory leak problem. Or even a downgrade might be useful. You can consider the following symptoms as a possible leak :

1. -Your device freezes so often, even if you do not have a lot of applications installed.
2. -You have to reboot your device at least once a week.
3. -Free File amount decreases and converges to zero quickly after a reboot.
4. -Restarting your device consumes more than a half of your battery.

If you are aware of such issues then upgrade your OS as soon as possible!

1. Adim: Mac’ten Windows’a Font Aktarimi

Apple’in built-in fontlarini direkt olarak Windows’a aktaramiyorsunuz, bunun icin ek bir yazilima ihtiyaciniz var. Tavsiye edecegim fontlar Helvetica, Helvetica Neue ve Lucida Grande. True-Type’a cevirmek icin ise CrossFont yazilimini kullanabilirsiniz: http://www.asy.com/scrcf.htm Ardindan, .ttf uzantili bu font’lari Windows\Fonts dizinine kopyalamaniz yeterli. En son islem, masaustunde sag tiklayip Properties/Goruntu Ozellikleri’ne girip sistemin yazitiplerini degistirmek.

2. Adim: Font Smoothing/Yumusatma

ClearType ne yazik ki bu yeni font’lari goruntulemekte yetersiz kaliyor. Bu noktada ise baska bir ufak yazilim olan GDI++ devreye giriyor. Mac’e yakin bir yumusatmayla ekran yazilari cok daha guzel gozukuyor. Ucretsiz olarak http://free.flop.jp/gdi++/src/gdi0909.zip adresinden indirebilirsiniz.

Bu 2 adim sonunda cok daha user-friendly bir goruntuyle karsilasacaksiniz. Helvetica, Helvetica Neue ve Lucida Grande’i kar amaci gutmeden kullanmak icin buradan indirebilirsiniz.

Firmware Password

Adim 1 – Firmware Password Koyun

Firmware Password nedir? MacBook’unuz varsayilan disk haricinde bir media araci ile acmak istenirse, DVD ya da Boot Camp Partition‘i gibi, kullanicinin karsilasacagi sifredir. Boylelikle kullanan kisinin Mac OS isletim sistemine girmekten baska bir caresi kalmamis oluyor. Calinti oldugundan suphelenen birisi olursa sizinle iletisime gecebilir. Turkiye’de bu durumun birkac ornegine internette rastladim.

Bahsettigim program bu. Lisans ucretleri $39 ile $49 arasinda degisiyor. Yaptigi islem ise soyle: MacBook’unuz calindiginda kisi oturum acinca program belirli araliklarla ekran goruntusu aliyor, iSight ile yine belirli araliklarla kullanicinin fotografini cekiyor, baglandigi aglarin listesini tutuyor, ve tum bu bilgileri size gonderiyor. Sonuc olarak, Mac’inizde eger hayati onem tasiyan bilgileriniz varsa bu yontemleri mutlaka uygulayin.

Sonuc olarak, yaklasik 1 haftadir BlackBerry Bold 9000 kullaniyorum ve bir kiyaslama yapmam gerekirse birkac eksisinin yaninda Windows Mobile’i kesinlikle aratmadigini soyleyebilirim.

Simdilik bir BB cihazla olmazsa olmaz olan BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) uyeligimi baslatmadim, onceden kullanmakta oldugum GPRS paketi uzerinden 3G ile internete giriyorum. Ay sonunda finallerin bitimiyle beraber BIS’e gecmeyi planliyorum.

GPRS APN Ayarlari

Cok basit. Ancak belirtmeliyim ki bazi programlar BIS/BES uyesi olunmadan calismayacaktir; BB Browser, Messenger‘lar gibi. Bunun icin de browser olarak Opera Mini 5, messenger programi olarak ise IM+ kullaniyorum. O yuzden gecici degilse bu yontemi kesinlikle tavsiye etmiyorum! Yapmaniz gereken ayarlar soyle:

GPRS APN Ayarlari
Menuden Options>Advanced Options>TCP/IP‘ye giriyoruz, ve APN Settings Enabled’i ve APN Authentication Enabled’i tickliyoruz. Ardindan AVEA (muhtemelen diger operatorler de dahil) icin,

APN: internet
Username for APN: gprs
Password for APN: gprs

yazip telefonu tekrar baslatiyoruz. Boylelikle herhangi bir BIS/BES data paketi olmadan sinirli da olsa islerimizi gorecek kadar internete 3G hiziyla girebiliyoruz.

Boylelikle istedigim gibi muzik yayini yapabilir duruma geldim.

MOC Player SSH

Bu kadarla yetinmeyip acaba Last.fm‘i terminal‘den dinleyebilir miyim diye baska bir arastirmaya basladim ve sonucu cok garipti. Yaygin olarak kullanilan LastBASH, mantigi istediginiz radyoya programda tune eden ve radyoda calan muzikleri bir m3u playliste kaydeden, daha sonra bunu istediginiz media player ile acip last.fm’i dinlemenizi saglayan bir program. Biraz karisik gelse de yukleyip kurdugunuz an hic sorun yasamadan mantigini anlayabilirsiniz.

Ancak bir suredir problemli bir sistem. Nedeni ise, m3u (playlist) dosyasinin bulundugu server’in yanit vermemesi. DNS ayarlariyla oynayip proxy dahi denemis olmama ragmen sonra bir aydir siteye bir turlu baglanamiyorum. Yani last.fm’i dinleyemiyorum.

Baska bir artisi yine SSH konusunda, MOC Player’i remote olarak diledigim gibi kontrol edebilmem extreme-mobility ozelligini sagliyor bana; uyanir uyanmaz yataktan dahi kalkmadan muzik dinlemeye baslayabiliyorum.
